Painting abstractly often involves first getting into a state of mind, which then becomes the driving force. Because there is not necessarily a clear narrative, as there can be in figurative painting, it is both easier and sometimes more difficult to interpret a message. Sometimes there may be no message at all, just a play of light, shadow and colour that blend together to form a whole.
