About ‘Fly's eye’ by Henk Egbertzen
The eyes of insects are compound eyes or facet eyes. Facet eyes consist of a lot of loose partial eyes, the ommatidia. There are sometimes thirty thousand of them! Each partial eye has its own lens and sees a very small part of the world. All these sub-eyes together form, like a kind of mosaic, a larger image of the world.
