The Central Market Hall in Amsterdam at the Jan van Galenstraat. In 1934, an entirely new area of 40 hectares was created under the name Central Market. The market was not open to the public. It was intended as a wholesale market, where shops and market vendors get their goods. In the Central Market Hall, form, function and beauty come together: the efficient design is combined with beautiful proportions in symmetry, uniformity, rhythm and repetition. Modern materials such as concrete and steel are combined with traditional brickwork and traditional design.
