Forest landscape with a merry company in a wagon, Meindert Hobbema (1665)
Oil on canvas, 110 x 90
In a wooded landscape, a merry company in a horse and wagon passes several farms. Figures on the side of the dirt road answer their exuberant waving. Meindert Hobbema, here at the height of his career, learned the trade from Jacob van Ruisdael. Although Hobbema's landscapes are very similar to those of his teacher, they are more cheerful and lighter. Tree tops stretch high in the sky and leaves shine in the sun. It is notable that Hobbema illuminated his trees from behind, giving the scene added depth.
