The Forest of Columns in the Karnak Temple in Egypt is an imposing collection of columned halls that give the impression of a light-flooded, monumental forest. The Karnak complex consists of several interconnected temples, of which the Great Hall (Opet Hall) and the Hypostyle Halls of Columns are up to two storeys high. The columns are arranged close together and create shady, quiet interior spaces. The columns are massive and support square or polygonal capitals. Many columns bear decorative hieroglyphs, reliefs and festoons. The edges of the columns are often decorated with reliefs that create effects of light and shadow. The hypostyle hall with 134 columns (78 front rows and 6 main axes) is particularly impressive. The ceiling rests on these columns, creating a cool, almost sacred space. The depth of perspective and the ritual symbolism of the room emphasise the connection between man, deities and the divine order. The columns bear relief-like depictions of gods, pharaohs, sacrificial acts and architectural scenes. Remnants of colour in some places give an impression of the once luminous ornaments. The "forest of columns" creates a calm, awe-inspiring atmosphere. The subtle light that floods through openings makes the reliefs appear alive and reinforces the feeling of having stepped back in time. Karnak was one of the largest temple complexes in ancient Egypt, dedicated to the god Amun. The many columns were not only used for the supporting structure, but also for ritual symbolism, representing the cosmic tree of life and the connection between heaven and earth.
Since I live at the Titisee in the Black Forest, I appreciate and know my region. I hope to be able to express my love of home in my pictures. Have fun browsing my landscape and studio shots
