The Mediterranean culture of France gave Hodgkins a simplicity of architectural forms, sparkling light and strong colors, all elements of what eventually became her own highly individual style. Even while painting in the more humid climates of Belgium and the Netherlands, memories of southern France and North Africa influenced her scenes of busy marketplaces and intimate vignettes of daily life.
In The Piano Lesson, vertical washes were used to quickly map the walls of the large salon in which these women sit. The windows are wide open to the garden beyond, letting in a cooling breeze. Curved colored lines dance and tumble across the center, and while the two figures at the piano are clearly defined, it takes longer to identify the woman bending over the table on the left.
Frances Mary Hodgkins (Dunedin, April 28, 1869 - May 13, 1947) was a New Zealand painter, primarily of landscapes and still lifes, and for a brief period was a textile designer. She was born and raised in New Zealand, but spent most of her working life in England. She is considered one of New Zealand's most prestigious and influential painters.
