About the artwork

Morgana (Morgan le Fay) also called Morgain, Morgaine, Morgane or another name, was the daughter of Igraine and Gorlois and half-sister of King Arthur and mother of Mordred. She was a mighty sorceress (or witch).

Morgana can be portrayed as an evil witch, but it also has a good side. Yet in almost all stories Morgana is an enemy of Arthur. So she wants to get the sword Excalibur more often. She also trained Mordred to attack Arthur once, and with success; she talked Mordred into hurting and almost killing his own father.

Some stories say that Morgana was a disciple of Merlin, who taught her to use magic.

Morgana ruled the island of Avalon where she stayed with her sisters.

Anthony Frederick Augustus Sandys (born as Antonio Frederic Augustus Sands, Norwich, May 1, 1829 - London, June 25, 1904) was an English painter who worked in the style of the Pre-Raphaelites.

Sandys turned out to be a painter and draughtsman with special gifts. He worked out his products in great detail and strived to depict his objects and persons very faithfully and precisely. He worked as an illustrator for various magazines. He acquired a wide fame and is therefore considered part of the group of 'Illustrators of the 60s'. Many of his works were used to make engravings. For his paintings he often chose themes from mythology and the stories about King Arthur.
