About ‘Free flight’ by Lina van Oers

A large flock of birds moves from left to right across the picture. Some birds are bright red or pink, whilst others are cream, green or pale brown. Their wings are all positioned differently, making the whole scene appear to be in constant motion.

The birds are delicately drawn and contrast sharply with the loose, painterly background. This consists of soft pink and blue areas, rough paint textures and unexpected brushstrokes. As a result, it feels as though the birds are flying above an abstract landscape or through a coloured sky.

There is no clear starting or ending point in the composition. Your eye keeps following a different bird each time. It is precisely this that gives the work a sense of liveliness and light. The image revolves entirely around movement, freedom and the unpredictable pattern of a flock of birds in flight.
