A cold November evening over Heusden. I had been planning this moonrise for days. From a distance of over one kilometre, I aimed my 500mm telephoto lens at the church tower, waiting for the moon to coincide exactly with the architecture.
The sky turned a soft blue as the full moon - large and low on the horizon - rose right next to the tower. The timing was exact: a bird flew through the frame just at the right moment, as if it was meant to be. That one split second completed the picture.
The silhouetted shape of the tower, the details of the bells, and the warm glow of the moon combined to form a sleek and graphic image. Not a coincidence, but planned and precisely executed. The following day, the picture was shown on RTL News.
Heusden's church tower is a landmark in the fortified town. The long focal length makes the moon appear extra large, which makes images like this so impressive - provided you find the right spot and timing.
