About ‘Gallant company, Pieter Codde’
Gallant company, Pieter Codde, 1633 Two gentlemen enter a room, one holding a partridge, the other a hare. Yet in their neat clothes they do not look as if they have just been hunting. In the 17th century, the ambiguity of the depiction must have been understood: 'hunting the hare' and 'birding' meant 'making love'. So the men are on a love hunt.
