About "Girl with Pearl"

by Gerard van der Klooster

About the artwork

The painting shows a young woman enveloped in nothing but the soft light embracing her skin. Her face, timeless and elusive, is unmistakably that of the Girl with the Pearl Earring, as immortalised by Johannes Vermeer. The distinctive turban-like headscarf, deep blue with golden yellow accents, rests loosely around her head, and the shining pearl still hangs from her ear, like an echo of her former self. But here she is different: vulnerable and intimate, stripped of her mysterious simplicity, while her naked form subtly glows against the darkness of the room.

The decor is sparse and enigmatic. The light, possibly coming from a window off-screen, caresses her shoulders and jawline, accentuating the soft curves of her body, then disappears into the shadows. Her gaze - a mixture of surprise and melancholy - inevitably raises questions. Did Vermeer paint her like this first, before covering her with paint and fabric? Or is this an alternative rendering, a depiction of what took place out of sight?

The painting raises more questions than it answers. Who was she really? A muse, a lover, or just a fleeting inspiration? The intimacy of this work suggests a closeness that remained hidden in Vermeer's original portrait. Is this the truth behind the veil of time, or just a new illusion of light and colour?
