About ‘Girl with a Pearl - Pop Art Study’ by Arjen Roos

Girl with a Pearl - Pop Art Study is a contemporary reinterpretation of an iconic image, translated into a powerful pop-art composition. The classic profile and recognisable headscarf are the starting point, but are sung loose from their historical context by colour, graphic lines and a layered background.

The portrait is composed of bright planes, high-contrast contours and subtle halftone structures. This combination creates a tension between figuration and abstraction: the face remains instantly recognisable, while colour and shape play the main role. The girl's gaze forms the visual anchor point, to which the composition keeps returning.

The background consists of geometric shapes and muted areas of colour that add depth and rhythm without drawing attention away from the portrait. The square format gives the work a distinct poster quality, making it read powerful and compact on the wall.
