Girl with the Red Hat is a small painting by the Delft painter Johannes Vermeer. Johannes Vermeer (1632 - 1675) is one of the most famous Dutch painters and lived during the Golden Age. The work is dated around 1665 and is located in the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C.
The original painting was painted as a tronie, meaning that it will not have been a portrait per se, but more of a study of a nicely dressed person. The person depicted is a young woman in a blue dress with lace details, and on her head she has a strikingly large, red hat. Despite the abstraction in this festively colored painting, her earring has remained clearly present.
Johannes Vermeer's original painting is quite brown and dark in color. This version, while still instantly recognizable to those in the know, is much more festive due to a brighter red color, which coincides nicely with the pink, yellow, orange, purple background. The blue of her dress provides a great contrast to all of this, but subtly blends into the brown background at the back left, really putting the focus on her front.
