Wide views of the Glenfinnan Monument on the northern bay of Loch Shiel. The photo was taken from the Glenfinnan Viewpoint near the visitor center. It is very cool to see the lake there, surrounded by the green mountains.
In the center of the photo you can see the 18-meter high monument consisting of a tower with a statue of a highlander in kilt. Erected in 1815, the memorial commemorates the clans who supported the 1745 Jacobite rising of Bonnie Prince Charlie (real name Charles Edward Stuart). 1,200 Highlanders had gathered in Glenfinnan. Charles announced that he was claiming the British throne, he wanted to re-establish absolute monarchy in the United Kingdom. To celebrate, the royal banner was hoisted and brandy was distributed. Despite this enthusiastic and hopeful moment, the 1746 uprising in Culloden ended in defeat.
