About ‘Golden Field III — Canopy’ by Whale & Sons

A solitary dark tree stands on the left in a vast golden-yellow landscape. The trunk splits into several thin branches which together support a dense, compact canopy. On the right, the view remains completely open. The asymmetrical placement lends the tree a sense of weight and makes the empty space a fully-fledged part of the composition.

Golden Field III – Canopy reduces the landscape to two main elements: tree and field. The crown is composed of dense dark-grey and black masses, whilst the branches beneath remain visible as a delicate network. Opposite this concentrated form lies a vast expanse of ochre, golden yellow and warm orange.

The tree determines the scale of the work, yet occupies only a small part of the surface. It is precisely this limitation that enhances its presence. The broad empty field gives a tangible sense of distance, silence and space without adding a horizon or any further landscape elements.

The golden-yellow surface contains visible traces of colour, abrasions and small dark accents. This keeps the background lively whilst the composition remains starkly reduced. ‘Canopy’ is the most landscape-like work within ‘Golden Field’ and, at the same time, the most elemental: a single tree, a single colour field and a great deal of space.
