About the artwork

Grain harvest. Three farmers busy removing bales of straw from a large table. The bales emerge from an agricultural machine on which the silhouettes of two other farmers can be discerned. In the foreground a child and a peasant woman, hand in hand. Behind the peasant woman is a jug and a mug. On the reverse, an outline in pencil of an architectural drawing. coloured chalk Johann Coenraad Hermann Heijenbrock (Amsterdam, 27 July 1871 - Blaricum, 18 March 1948) was a painter of labour, trade and industry. After studying at the drawing academy in Rotterdam, he recorded the development of heavy industry in many European countries in the first decades of the 20th century. His hundreds of oil paintings and pastels of industrial landscapes were made by this 'painter of light and labour' not just to create beautiful works of art. He also produced the depictions of factories, mines, machines and the role of the worker in the production process to document his admiration for man's labour power, aided by machines. That social commitment and documentation drive led to a unique depiction of production processes in the early 20th century.
