The Groot Handelsgebouw (or Grand Trade Building) next to the Central Station is one of the most distinctive buildings in Rotterdam from the reconstruction period after the Second World War.
The huge complex, built after a design by the architects Maaskant and Van Tijen, is located on the site where the Zoo used to be until the bombardment of Rotterdam in 1940.
The building was opened in 1953 as a collective location for whole sale businesses and is now mainly used as an office. On the ground floor there are also shops and restaurants and on the roof is still the auditorium of the former cinema Kriterion.
The Grand Trade Building has recently been completely restored and now has the status of a national monument.
