The Caelifera are a suborder of insects belonging to the order Orthoptera (right winged) or crickets and grasshoppers. The group is also known as the true locusts or short locusts, because they have relatively short antennas compared to the only other group of right-wing, Ensifera or longitudinal locusts. The latter group includes all sable grasshoppers and crickets.
The Caelifera include all the typical locusts, such as the field grasshoppers. All draught grasshoppers also belong to this group. Most species have wings, although in some species these are too small to fly.
The stridulation of Caelifera is usually done by spreading the leg along a toothed wing edge, in contrast to the Ensifera, which often rub the wings along each other. However, there are different mechanisms
