The great spotted woodpecker is adapted to a life in the trees. The toes are placed in such a way that the bird can easily climb vertically. The tail is firm and is used as a support when climbing. The strong, sharp beak of the great spotted woodpecker is used by the bird, among other things, to chop out a nesting hole, to look for food and to make contact with peers. The food is mainly found on trunks and branches of trees, where the beak is used to lure insects and small animals out of the wood.
