Groningen, Martini Tower.
The Martini Tower, standing at the Grote Markt, with its 96.8 meters is the highest tower in the city of Groningen. The tower is part of the Martinikerk. For the inhabitants of the city, the tower is nicknamed d' Olle Grieze, Groningen slang for the old grey one.
The current Martini Tower had two predecessors. The first tower was built in the 13th century. It was about 30 metres high and entirely in the Romanesque style. On the 13th century city seal of Groningen is a picture of the tower. It originally stood to the west of the church, but due to the extension of the northern and southern aisles of the Martinikerk to the west, it was annexed. The tower had a pyramid-shaped tent roof and two round arched galleries. This tower was destroyed by a lightning strike in 1408. From 1430 onwards the church was extended in Gothic style, whereby in 1452 the construction of a second tower of about 45 metres high, which was partly made of stone and partly of wood, was started. The church walls were erected against the tower in 1461. On the Tuesday after Easter in 1465 a great fire raged in the tower as a result of a 'great thunder and blyxem', according to the chronicle of Sicke Benninghe. Possibly as a result of this the tower collapsed in 1468 and so did all the extensions around it.[
