The Groninger Museum in winter with ice cream.
The museum was founded in 1894 and for many years it stood on Praediniussingel in the city centre. One hundred years later, in 1994, the current location was opened.
This building is considered one of the highlights of postmodernist architecture. To design the new museum, which at the time was headed by Frans Haks, the chief architect Alessandro Mendini brought in guest architects, namely designer Michele de Lucchi from Italy, Philippe Starck from Paris and Coop Himmelb(l)au with offices in Vienna and Los Angeles.
The design consists of different styles, including deconstructivism and traditional brickwork, and depicts the diversity of the collection where one art form is not elevated above another
