The first Parish Church of Harderwijk was the Sint Nicolaaskerk, which was just outside the walls of the city. In 1415, when the tower of the church was damaged by fire, permission was obtained to build a new parish church within the walls. In the city one already had the Onze Lieve Vrouwe Chapel (14th century). This chapel, in size approximately 30 by 21 meters, was expanded to the currently known dimensions and could be used as a new parish church. At the same time, construction began on the tower, which was completed in about 1440.
