The youngest child has a golden crucifix around his neck. So these are Roman Catholic boys. The Latin text above little Simon's head tells why he has no clothes on: he rejects all wealth. This may be a reference to Jesus' words that only the poor will enter heaven, but it could also mean that Simon's pious parents wanted him to become a priest.
