This statue depicts Guanyin, the Bodhisattva of Compassion, with a young child on her arm. This depiction, known as Guanyin Songzi ("Guanyin bestowing a child"), is a popular portrayal in the Chinese-Buddhist heritage and is also often worshipped in Java. Guanyin is the female manifestation of Avalokiteshvara, the embodiment of infinite compassion. In this particular guise, she is seen as protector of mothers and children and bringer of fertility, prosperity and well-being.
The child on her lap, naked and with a playful smile, symbolises innocence, new life and spiritual purity. Guanyin's calm gaze and graceful posture express her compassion and serenity. The small Buddha in her crown refers to Amitabha, her spiritual origin and teacher. The golden skin, colourful robes and blue decorative ribbons enhance her divine radiance.
In Java, this statue testifies to the cultural interweaving between Chinese Buddhist and local Javanese traditions. Believers pray to Guanyin with Child for protection, health and the fulfilment of children's wishes. As a universal symbol of maternal love and compassion, she transcends religious boundaries and remains a source of comfort, hope and spiritual strength.
