Gustave Courbet (1819-1877) was a leading French realist of the 19th century. As a pioneering painter, he placed everyday life and the working class at the centre of his works. Courbet rejected romantic ideals and favoured a direct, honest depiction of reality. His powerful paintings, such as "The Artist's Studio" and "The Stonebreakers", influenced the development of modern art and earned him controversy as well as acclaim.
