The half-timbered house (Riegelhaus in Switzerland) is the best-known use of timber framework in building construction in Germany and large parts of Switzerland. The oldest half-timbered houses in Germany date from the 13th century. In the historical past, the solid stone building was mainly used for churches and monasteries, while residential houses, farmsteads and also residences of the bourgeoisie were built as half-timbered houses. Probably the oldest half-timbered houses can be found in Limburg, six of which indicate that they were built in 1289 and 1296.
