Evening light over the Handelskade captures one of Curaçao’s most beloved spots as the day slowly gives way to evening. The iconic Queen Emma Bridge forms an elegant link between the colourful historic façades of Willemstad, whilst the deep blue hues of the sky and water provide a stunning contrast to the warm colours of the buildings. The reflections in the water lend the painting an extra sense of vibrancy and allow you to feel the magic of a tropical evening.

The inspiration for this work comes from the many times I have stood along the Handelskade and watched the light change throughout the day. It is particularly in the evening that the colours take on a special intensity. The combination of the illuminated buildings, the famous pontoon bridge and the tranquil Sint Annabaai makes this, for me, one of the most beautiful spots on the island. With this painting, I wanted not only to capture a recognisable cityscape, but above all to convey the feeling of coming home and the relaxed Caribbean atmosphere.

The painting is built up from multiple layers of acrylic paint, applied with palette knives and expressive brushstrokes. The rich texture, bold contour lines and vibrant colours lend extra depth to both the architecture and the water. The colourful reflections create a sense of movement and ensure that the painting reveals new details from every angle.
