Hands on Deck on the bow

A gloomy day in IJmuiden. On the bow of a large ocean-going vessel stands a sailor, small against the ship's massive steel skin. The vessel lies motionless in the lock, the mooring lines taut to the bollards on shore. The water in the whirlpool rises or falls slowly, the movement almost imperceptible but palpable to those watching. Around him a view ahead the North Sea Canal and all around him industry and IJmuiden, the gateway to the North Sea Canal, the entrance to the port of Amsterdam. The light is muted, the sky heavy with clouds, blending steel, water and concrete in shades of grey. An image of transition: from sea to inland water, from space to seclusion.

Port photography is a fascinating form of photography that focuses on capturing the activity in ports. Port cities are often bustling centres of commerce and industry, where ships, trucks and trains move in and out to load and unload goods.
