What made this such a popular image? The fact that it depicts a lovely child in her best clothes? The girl, as was customary at the time, was portrayed as a small adult lady. Only her facial expression betrays that she is only playing that role. Unfortunately, we do not know her name and we know nothing of her family. Perhaps she lived in Haarlem, like the portrait painter Verspronck.
To me she is the apple of my eye, who unfortunately misses the apple of my eye after the apple harvest. But fortunately she is still alive. A beautiful work of art for your wall.
