When you stand on a mountain and see other mountain peaks in the distance, you can often determine which peaks are further away than others by the degree of 'haziness'. Here, the darker contours are closer. This is called the 'atmospheric perspective'. On a small scale, you find this along the coast when the water vapour coming from breaking waves slowly accumulates against the cliffs. The same effect in miniature and extra magical when a pool of water on the otherwise dry reef creates a mirror effect. Southwest Portugal at its best.
