About ‘Helios I — Measure of Day’ by Whale & Sons

An orange-red disc is centred within a series of concentric lines. From the lower half, a steady rhythm of vertical black stripes runs downwards. The circle and the line thus form two distinct systems: one revolves around a centre point, the other moves in a single, fixed direction.

Helios I — Measure of Day reduces the sun to a symbol. The title refers to Helios, the Greek personification of the sun, who traces his path across the sky anew every day. Here, that movement is not depicted narratively, but translated into repetition and geometric order.

The concentric rings enlarge the central disc and lend it an almost ritualistic presence. The vertical lines then introduce something measurable: a sequence of equal intervals reminiscent of time, counting or a calendar structure.

Contrasting with this order is a visibly irregular surface. The lines have small interruptions, the red is not entirely even, and the off-white background bears subtle traces. This irregularity prevents the geometry from becoming sterile and gives the work its physical character.
