Bacchante with a monkey is a painting by the Dutch painter Hendrick ter Brugghen. It shows a tipsy woman amidst symbols of debauchery, including a monkey.
The maid is a follower of Bacchus, god of wine. She holds her body slightly twisted and bends slightly forward. Almost drunk, she focuses her eyes on the viewer, a red blush on her cheeks and a broad, debauched smile on her face.
Her round breasts are shown provocatively and shamelessly. In her right hand she holds a bunch of grapes that she squeezes out in a golden drinking bowl.
This tronie-like half-figure stands in a caravagge-like style with some eroticism in which it was mainly about depicting a specific expressive facial expression or emotion, often in a strong chiaroscuro.
Hendrick Jansz. ter Brugghen or Terbrugghen (presumably The Hague, 1588 - Utrecht, 1 November 1629) was a Dutch painter, who is counted among the Utrecht Caravaggists.
