The old ship lift Henrichenburg from 1899 and the new one from 1962 are only a few hundred metres apart and belong to the canal stage Henrichenburg of the federal waterway Dortmund-Ems-Canal in Waltrop-Oberwiese. They are named after the former municipality of Henrichenburg, today the northernmost district of Castrop-Rauxel, which reaches close to the site from the south. The Waterways and Shipping Authority Duisburg-Meiderich is responsible.
The old lift was supplemented in 1914 by a shaft lock with two times five economising basins. Between 1958 and 1962, the new float lift was built, so that the old lift was closed down in 1969. The old shaft sluice was replaced by an economising sluice with two economising basins in 1989. Until 2005, the new lift and the new lock were operated in parallel. Since then, shipping traffic only flows through the lock. All four structures are part of the Waltrop lock park.
The Henrichenburg boat lift facilitates a change in elevation of the Dortmund-Ems Canal in Waltrop-Oberwiese. The boat lift is part of the Waltrop Lock Park (Schleusenpark), which includes the old Henrichenburg boat lift built in 1899, a disused shaft lock from 1912, the new boat lift built in 1962 and a modern ship lock from 1989.
The Henrichenburg boat lift is a popular destination for cyclists along the canals of the northern Ruhr Area.
