"Car workshop of the Amsterdamsche Rijtuig Maatschappij (ARM)" by Herman Heijenbrock is an impressive painting showing a car workshop in Amsterdam. The work, painted between 1913 and 1948, shows a scene in which five men are busy repairing cars's. The workers are in an industrial setting, full of machines and tools, highlighting the dynamism and hard work in the workshop.
Heijenbrock's use of pastel technique and detailed shadows creates a realistic and vivid depiction of the scene. The colours are muted, adding to the atmosphere of the workshop. The painting is a testament to the industrial revolution and the role of the worker in that period.
This work is an important example of Heijenbrock's talent for capturing the beauty and hard work of industry.
Johann Coenraad Hermann Heijenbrock (Amsterdam, 27 July 1871 - Blaricum, 18 March 1948) was a painter of labour, trade and industry.
After training at the drawing academy in Rotterdam, he recorded the development of heavy industry in many European countries in the first decades of the 20th century. His hundreds of oil paintings and pastels of industrial landscapes were made by this 'painter of light and labour' not just to create beautiful works of art. He also produced the depictions of factories, mines, machines and the role of the worker in the production process to document his admiration for man's labour power, aided by machines. This social commitment and documentation drive resulted in a unique depiction of production processes in the early 20th century.
