Egyptian hieroglyphs (Ancient Greek: hieros - "sacred", glyphoi - "grooves") constitute the script of ancient Egypt. By the Egyptians themselves they were called Medu Netjer or "Divine Words", which refers to the legend that the god Thoth once gave the script to the Egyptians. The script originated around 3100 BC and was used until the end of the Ancient Egyptian civilization, after which it was gradually replaced by Greek and Coptic, and still later Arabic.
