About "Hikers descend from the Red Crater, Tongariro Alpine Crossing"

by Paul van Putten

About the artwork

The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is the most popular day hike in New Zealand. But also one of the toughest. It is located in the middle of the North Island. Over 19.4 kilometres hikers will find themselves between a number of volcanoes. The highlight of the hike is the impressive Red Crater, from where you have a breathtaking view of the surroundings and the Emerald lakes. The colours in this area are unreal. The descent is one of the most difficult parts of the hike as the slope consists of loose stones and pebbles (scree). The area was the film set for Mordor from The Lord of the Rings, with Mt Ngauruhoe as Mount Doom.
