The Engbertsdijksvenen is a protected nature reserve in the municipality of Twenterand in Overijssel. Covering about 1,000 hectares, the area is a remnant of the large peat swamp that once covered northeastern Netherlands. This is where peat used to be cut. On tipping carts, it was transported on rails and taken to drying places after which it was sold as fuel. It is a relatively barren but very diverse area and wonderful for a nice walk. Heaths and large puddles alternate, every now and then you encounter a hiker but generally there is a serene peace in this beautiful area.
