About ‘Historic façades in Funchal, Madeira’ by Charlotte Hagg

This photo was taken in Funchal, the capital of Madeira. During my stay on the island, I noticed how different the city feels once you leave the busiest streets behind. On this spring day, the narrow streets were remarkably quiet, allowing me to focus entirely on the architecture and the details of the surroundings.

What appealed to me about this image is the way the sunlight falls on the façades. The warm colours of the buildings are enhanced by the natural light, whilst the shadows provide contrast and depth. The combination of the quiet street, the characteristic buildings and the mild spring weather made this spot particularly photogenic.

During my walking holiday in Madeira, I had my camera with me almost all the time. It is precisely at moments like this, when the usual cityscape is briefly free of hustle and bustle, that photo's emerge which truly capture the atmosphere of a place. This photo shows a tranquil side of Funchal that is easily overlooked.
