The Netherlands, Rotterdam - Delfshaven
This picturesque marina is one of the few pieces of old city that survived the bombing of Rotterdam in 1940. It has a striking history as the place from where the Pilgrim Fathers left for America and as the birthplace of sea hero Piet Hein. The Pilgrim's Church from 1761 reminds us of that time and is open to the public on Fridays and Saturdays. On Sundays there are divine services. Delfshaven used to make a living from fishing for herring and distilling gin. Now you'll find cosy antiques and trinkets shops, artists' studios, gin bars, beer brewers and no-nonsense restaurants in the historic canal-side cottages. Historical Delfshaven has always managed to retain its authentic looks, with the old-fashioned corn mill De Destilleerketel as an important landmark.
