Hoog Catharijne

by Domstad Rudie

This digital artwork depicts an intriguing cityscape of Utrecht, with Hoog Catharijne, the restored Singel and the Poortgebouw taking centre stage. The image illustrates the transition from old to new and captures the harmony between the historical context and modern urban development. At the heart of the artwork stands the Poortgebouw: a stately, contemporary structure of glass and steel. The façade catches the soft light of the afternoon sun, casting a warm glow over the building. This contrast between light and shadow emphasises the clean lines and open character of the architecture.
At the foot of the building, the Singel – the recently reopened waterway surrounding the city centre – winds its way through the scene as a soothing element. The reflection of the sky, trees and buildings in the water creates a sense of depth and movement. Along the banks, people go about their business – walking, cycling or sitting on benches – subtly reflecting urban life.
In the background, Hoog Catharijne is visible as a modern, vibrant centre, with transparent façades and a clear interplay of lines. Its structure complements the forms of the Poortgebouw, emphasising the cohesion within the cityscape.
The colour palette consists of natural tones – soft blues, warm greys and the reflective light of the water – which radiate tranquillity and balance. The work captures the essence of a city in transition: a place where history and renewal meet in a carefully designed environment.
