The Hooge der Aa in Groningen's historic centre with old sailboats and the Der Aa Church (or A-Church) in the morning mist.
The Akerk was built around 1200 and has been rebuilt and extended several times over the centuries. The church's name refers to the, former, river Aa.
The Hooge der A and the Lage der A are two picturesque streets in the centre of the city of Groningen, these streets run along both sides of the A between Brugstraat and Visserstraat. These streets owe their name "Hoge" and "Lage" to the quays, high on the east side and low on the west side.
Until 1877, the influence of the sea was noticeable in the city; after the Reitdiep was dammed, this was no longer the case. Until then, the high quay was used for unloading ships at high tide, the low one at low tide.
