The Hoover Dam, also known as the Boulder Dam to the town of Boulder (Boulder City) 12 km away, is a concrete arch dam in the Colorado near the Black Canyon (on the border between the American states of Arizona and Nevada). The dam - which lies 48 kilometres southeast of Las Vegas - is named after Herbert Hoover who played a key role in the construction of the dam, first as Secretary of Commerce and later as President of the United States.
