Lying on my belly in the cold wet mud. Between me and the mud only a few rubbish bags from my photo bag. My converted infrared camera focused on a magical view: the iconic "Hore". The Matterhorn, bathed in beautiful infrared light.
It was autumn, the post-season. Most lifts were at a standstill, making it a brisk hike. No time for quiet enjoyment; every minute counted. The predicted veil clouds were exactly what I was hoping for. Right on time, just before the light disappeared, I pressed on.
Then the race against the clock began. Back down before it got dark. It was gruelling, but worth every step. Because some photos you don't get for free, you have to earn them.
