Horizons lashed by the wind

by Annette Schmucker

The painting *Windswept Horizons* is an abstract, impressionist work depicting a vast, weathered landscape. The colour palette is muted and earthy, dominated by various shades of brown, grey and gold, interspersed with deep, washed-out shades of plum or wine red and a few bluish-grey and turquoise hues. The texture of the painting is rich and tactile, with visible brushstrokes and palette knife marks that create a deep, layered surface and subtly diffuse the light, reminiscent of aged stone, sandstone or perhaps even a weathered fresco.
The lower part of the painting, which occupies about two-thirds of the composition, resembles a dark, uneven ground, criss-crossed by diagonal and vertical lines reminiscent of rock crevices, paths or flowing water. This area is characterised by deep browns, black and a washed-out plum red.
The upper part of the painting, comprising about one-third, is dominated by a lighter, hazy sky, predominantly rendered in golden and cream tones. It transitions into lighter, warmer browns and is criss-crossed by fine, web-like patterns or lines that run across the lighter areas like cracks or delicate veins, particularly in the top right-hand quadrant, lending the sky a fragile, almost crystalline structure.
