In the winter, humpback whales gather in the waters near Hawaii to mate and give birth. They migrate for this purpose from their feeding grounds near Alaska to Hawaii where the water temperature is pleasantly warm in winter. The humpback whale owes its name to its humpback dorsal fin and belongs to the baleen whales that filter food from the seawater with their baleens. This can be shrimp but also small fish and invertebrates.
