Hunebeds are stone burial chambers built in prehistoric times to bury the dead. Besides the body, possessions such as weapons and jewellery were also placed in the grave.
A hunebed consists of supporting stones and roofing stones. They are very special structures because they are large and heavy stones stacked on top of each other.
In the Netherlands, we find hunebeds mainly in Drenthe. Often near villages and sometimes at very special locations. The one in this picture is the largest in the Netherlands and stands near the Hunebedcentrum in Borger.
