About the artwork

Hydrangea (Hydrangea) is a genus in the hydrangea family (Hydrangeaceae). It is mainly evergreen and deciduous shrubs and climbing shrubs and a few trees. Altogether there are nearly 100 species that grow in America and in China and Japan. Some species flower with a large, pyramidal panicle, others with a flattened screen or, on the contrary, a more spherical inflorescence with many sterile, infertile marginal flowers. These aim to attract insects that then feast on the nectar in the fertile, fertile flowers in the centre of the inflorescence. The best-known hydrangea is the large hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla). The many cultivars have pink, white, red or even (purple) blue inflorescences. The genus is named after a woman, but it is not known for sure which one. Reference is often made to Hortense de Beauharnais, daughter of Empress Joséphine de Beauharnais of France, but she had not yet been born when the genus was given this name by botanist Philibert Commerson around 1771. It is suspected that the Hortense referred to was actually Hortense of Nassau, daughter of Charles Henry Nicolaus Otto, Prince of Nassau-Siegen, who himself took part in an expedition around the world.
