In this engraving Bruegel depicts a welcome break from the daily grind. The subject is Bruegel's own compatriots from Antwerp. The artist devotes a great deal of attention to the bystanders, who enjoy the antics on the ice. Especially the bare buttocks of the fallen skater attract a lot of attention. The ice amusement and skaters on the water around the city of Antwerp near the Sint-Jorispoort shows in the foreground on the right a child on a sledge.
Pieter Bruegel the Elder (possibly Breda (Netherlands) or Breugel, between 1525 and 1530 - Brussels, (Belgium) 9 September 1569) was a painter from Brabant.
