Originally, a soldier was a man of war who served in exchange for his pay (i.e. not in exchange for a fiefdom or feudal charter). Nowadays, 'soldier' is a military rank (in the Netherlands such low ranks are referred to as 'rank'). Soldiers or sailors (mans) belong to the so-called ungraded[source?] personnel of the armed forces. They perform all lower executive tasks and can be deployed for various services within the unit of the armed forces to which they belong.
