Victoria is the capital of the Seychelles. Located on the north-east coast of the island of Mahé, it is the largest locality and only city on the island republic, with a population of just over 26,000. Today's name refers to the British Queen Victoria. The area of today's Victoria was settled by French colonialists as early as 1778. This is commemorated by the Bicentennial Memorial in the centre of Victoria. Until 1841, the settlement was called L'Etablissement du Roy, then the British renamed it Victoria after the then Queen.
